I had never known of the National Bison Range until I was driving north of Missoula and saw a sign which urged the managment of the range be turned over the local Native Americans. I then saw a sign which indicated a good photography opportunity and decided to investigate. I am glad I did. The mountains in the background are the Mission Mountains.

The drive through the National Bison Range is very steep and over 18-miles long.The number of bison in the park is second only to Yellowstone. In addition to bison, the park has antelope, deer, big horn, and bear.

The highest point in the National Bison Range provides this view that looks across the Missoula Valley toward the Mission Mountains. At one time this valley was under Lake Missoula.

As I proceeded along the road toward the exit of the bison range, I saw this doe resting in the grass and stopped to take a picture. It was then I noted the other deer in the area and took the picture which was to be the front of this year's Christmas card.

Just down the slope from their mother these two fawns hid in the grass. I noticed the one facing me but did not see the second one until I looked through the telephoto lens. We have a large, framed copy of this picture in the department office at Utah State University.

Flathead Lake is between Missoula and Glacier National Park. It is a major recreation area for northwest Montana.

Upon entering the park, one of the first views was of Lake McDonald with the sunrise shinning on the hills north of the lake. This was Sunday morning and the area was overcast.

One of my wishes was fulfilled on the first day when, about five miles into the park, I looked beside the road and saw a black, furry face looking back at me. It was a sow black bear with two cubs.

As I snapped pictures that the bears started to cross the road. I had been told tha the bears were a problem in 2004. There was a very poor berry crop in the high areas of the park and the bears had been coming into town and lower areas looking for food.

You can now tell that mom and the kids had successfully made it across the highway. The road is Going to the Sun road which is the main highway across Glacier National Park. The lake in the background is Lake McDonald.

Heading on down the road you travel beside McDonald Creek for about 10 miles. Going to the Sun is 50 miles long of which 35 miles are a pleasure. The other 15 miles are full of terror if you don't like heights. I don't.

To give you an idea of the road, this is a view of McDonald Creek and the highway from about half way up the mountain to Logan Pass. Note the U-shaped valley carved by glaciers during the last ice age.

There are so many mountains in the park I could not learn the names of all of them. I think this is Mt. Reynolds.
