In the morning and evening the roads belong to the bison. These were taking a stroll between the West Gate and Madison Junction.

Even though Old Faithful Geyser is not the largest geyser in the park, it is world famous because it erupts at regular intervals. The eruptions rise over 100 feet high. During our visit it erupted every 90 minutes.

The Old Faithful Lodge turned 100 years old in 2004. It is located right next to the Old Faithful Geyser. In addition to the Lodge there are other hotels and cabins available in the area.

Geyser Hill is part of the main complex at Old Faithful. The hill is located right behind the
world’s most famous geyser. The sulfur from the hot springs give the look of gold.

Midway Geyser area is between Old Faithful and Madison Junction.
Each minute over 4000 gallons of water flow into the Firehole River. It also contains the largest hot spring in the park, Grand Prismatic Spring.

In May, 2004,
while driving from Madison Junction toward the Norris Basin we saw several cars stopped on the side of the road. The reason was this coyote, still with a lot of his winter coat, standing on a rock guard rail.

Steamboat Geyser, located in the Norris Basin, is the largest geyser in the world. Its eruptions are three times the height of Old Faithful. It may erupt only once a decade or may be as active as 2003 when it erupted three times. There were no eruptions in 2004.

The highway between West Thumb and Fishing Bridge is a major area for wildlife viewing. Hayden Valley, between Fishing Bridge and Canyon Village is considered second only to the Lamar Valley for viewing wildlife. Here is a mother Bison with two calves one of which is a newborn. Note the elk in the background.

This is a bison cow with her newborn calf. If you look you can still see part of the chord attached to the calf's belly. This picture was taken in May which is the height of the calfing season.

Mammoth Hot Springs is a large calcite deposit located above the town. The town is near the original entrace to the park which is now called the north entrance. Fort Yellowstone is also located in the town. The hotel is one of the ones open during the winter.
